Ex Machina Movie’s Review and The Correlation with Human Computer Interaction

Ex Machina is a 2015 independent Great Britain science fiction movie directed by Alex Garland and produce by Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich. This movie tells about Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a ticket to the secret research facility owned by Nathan (Oscar Isaac). Nathan is the owner of search engine company called Blue Book, where Caleb works for as a programmer. Nathan tells Caleb that he made a robot with Artificial Intelligence and the robot look like human. The robot is called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Caleb is assigned to do a Turing test to Ava.

Turing Test is held to test whether Ava could interact with Caleb just like a normal human’s interaction or not. After the first meeting with Ava, Caleb wondering why he need to do the Turing test face to face with Ava, because it makes him feel like he is interacting with robot. But Nathan have a different perspective, he think that by showing the real form of Ava, will Caleb still think that Ava is a robot with all the intelligence that Ava had that look like a human.

After several meetings with Ava, Caleb realizes that he has a feeling for Ava, and he thinks Ava has the same feeling as him. Ava starts to tell something about Nathan and his laboratory to Caleb. It changes Caleb’s view of Nathan and his laboratory so he decides to help Ava to escape from Nathan’s laboratory. They make a plan to escape, but before they execute the plan, Nathan tells Caleb that he knows about the plan and gives explanation about the situation and suggest Caleb not to trust Ava. After that conversation Caleb is regretting that he had trusted Ava. At the end of the stories, it have a plot twist that I didn’t expect.

This movie gives information about Artificial Intelligence, which represent with a robot that has artificial intelligence that makes it could interact like human. How Ava can speak, change expression, act like a human with a help from Artificial Intelligence. And this movie have a Human Computer Interaction, like face recognizer when Caleb make an ID Card to enter the house, voice recognizer to turn off the light, sensors to turn on the light when there is a movement, interaction between Ava and Caleb, and interaction between Kyoko and Caleb or Kyoko and Nathan even though the interaction is not as perfect as interaction between Ava and Caleb. Also this movie remind us to not make something that above human intelligence, because it can be a harm for the human itself.
